Tanker Routes Pose Risk to Critical Habitat for Whales
Areas designated as critical habitat must be legally protected from destruction under SARA (Species At Risk Act). The presence of commercial vessel traffic is one of the activities recognized as likely to destroy critical whale habitat. Both Kinder Morgan and Enbridge's tanker routes cut through critical whale habitat. In addition to the risks of ship strikes and acoustic disturbance, the whales are in danger of being displaced entirely from this critical habitat - the affects of which could be seen at the population-level.
