Jess Coughlan, senior campaigner at Environment Tasmania, said the lack of fines did little to spur the salmon industry to prevent mass deaths. “Penalties must apply, as they do in Norway, as a disincentive to allowing current mortality rates to become the new normal, and bring animal welfare back into focus for an industry that is clearly beyond control,” she said. "RAS is an aquaculture adaptation strategy known for being more eco-friendly, water-efficient and highly productive, as it is not associated with the harmful environmental impacts of open-net pen aquaculture. “Bob Chamberlin, chair of the First Nations Wild Salmon Alliance, which includes more than 120 First Nations, said the federal government should create a First Nation-led plan to protect the wild fish, similar to the joint land use plan for governing the Great Bear Rainforest.” Read more at BIV.

"We are well aware of the so-called debate over the impacts of salmon farms, but remember that we were on the farms, did the research, we are collaborating with many scientists – we know what is going on in these farms, and this is what happens to wild salmon when farm lice numbers go up," Homiskanis continued.
