Healthy Oceans. Healthy Communities.

Living Oceans Society has left X (formerly Twitter)

Our decision to leave X has been a long time coming. Since Elon Musk bought the platform in October 2022, there’s been a decline in moderation and functionality, an increase in hate speech and fake news, and a widespread feeling that it’s no longer fit for purpose. The platform’s current state no longer aligns with our values or the community we seek to be part of. By staying, we risk endorsing an environment that is increasingly toxic.

We know that many organisations and individuals have the same misgivings about X and are thinking about making the same move. For us, this is a decision that is guided by our values. False and misleading information that leads to polarisation and division is a threat to our work as an environmental organization. We hope our leaving X sends a clear message: we prioritise safety, inclusivity and integrity in our digital spaces.

We will continue to evaluate the digital landscape and assess how different platforms perform in accordance with our audience needs and organisational goals. The recent emergence of alternative platforms provides us with new opportunities. We will shift our focus to these spaces, ensuring our advocacy remains effective, impactful, and accessible to all who share our commitment.

You can still find us on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky and LinkedIn

We will also continue to communicate our work outside of social media, including through our website and newsletters. Stay in touch by signing up for our newsletters and updates
