"Nakamura also disclosed efforts by the MSC to suppress the study’s findings. “The MSC dismissed the claims, saying its focus is ecological—which, by the way, is a line they forced me to add to the introduction when they pressured the journal during peer review. They’ve twice obtained the research data, findings, methods, and manuscript since June 2023, adjusting their website along the way.
“The GFCM supports countries in their efforts to eradicate IUU fishing through a variety of tools, ranging from technology to training programmes and digital solutions like electronic logbooks. "Like any fishery or aquaculture product, there can be sustainable or unsustainable sources," said Roebuck of Living Oceans.
"It is impossible for consumers to know what species is being utilized and whether they are contributing to overfishing, marine degradation or even illegal activities."
