New system alerts coastal First Nations about hazardous spills on land and water

"A new notification system and app that alerts coastal B.C. First Nations about oil or hazardous chemical spills on their lands and waters was recently launched.

The initiative was developed collaboratively between 12 First Nations and the province’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. The process was coordinated by Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative. " Read full article.

[Not] Living with the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion

“When approving the Trans Mountain expansion project, the federal government made promises that measures to reduce the tanker threats to killer whales would be in place before the pipeline was operational. salmon farm licensing decision welcomed with caution

VANCOUVER: traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations - In a decision released yesterday, Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier expressed the government’s intention to “ban” the open-net pen salmon farm industry by 2029. Living Oceans is pleased to see the Minister making an appropriately precautionary decision to protect wild salmon, but expresses concern for its implementation.
