DFO is seeking to evaluate public knowledge of ghost gear (abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear) still in the water and gather feedback on future plans, measures and tools to prevent and address ghost gear. "The rescue society says the adult male sea lion was spotted Oct. 20 with a gillnet tightly wrapped around its muzzle, neck, and inside its mouth, preventing him from eating, causing significant injury and malnutrition." Read the full CBC story.

Restoration of kelp forests lost to ocean heat waves and overgrazing sea urchins is underway off Vancouver Island’s coastlines with guidance from local researchers.

Experts from the University of Victoria have teamed up with the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on the project, known as the Kelp Rescue Initiative. Read the full article.
