Ecojustice heads back to court as fish farm giant appeals wild salmon win

VANCOUVER / UNCEDED xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (MUSQUEAM), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (SQUAMISH), AND səlilwətaɬ (TSLEIL-WAUTUTH) TERRITORIES — Today, Ecojustice will return to court to defend a major victory for wild salmon.

The case goes before the Federal Court of Appeal after salmon farming company Mowi Canada West Inc. launched an appeal of a June 2024 Federal Court ruling that upheld the Minister of Fisheries’ decision not to renew licenses for open-net pen fish farms in B.C.’s Discovery Islands.

New ASC Farm Standard serves salmon industry, not oceans

For immediate release: Across the globe, conservation groups from major salmon farming regions – Norway, Canada, Chile, Scotland, and Australia – have criticized the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s (ASC) newly released Farm Standard for continuing to endorse irresponsible salmon farming practices that place wild fish and marine ecosystems at risk.

The ASC Farm Standard adopts Salmon Standard criteria that are either outdated or have been weakened over the last decade to accommodate industry ‘business as usual’ practices:

New study shows increased pathogens near B.C. open-net salmon farms

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports, examined environmental DNA to determine the levels of bacteria, fungi and viruses previously shown to be harmful to wild salmon. Read the full CBC article here.

Canada and Washington State chose wild native fish and public waters over farmed salmon. Australia must do the same.
