VANCOUVER -- Delegates to one of the largest ocean management planning events in Canadian history are sending a clear message to the federal government that it’s time to take action to improve the conservation of British Columbia’s coastal waters.
VANCOUVER – Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit to stop seismic blasting by an American research vessel that threatens endangered whales in a Canadian marine protected area.
VANCOUVER – In the midst of a lawsuit launched by environmental groups, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has just granted permission for a controversial American research ship to conduct seismic blasting in a Canadian marine protected area. The Minister granted this permit at the close of business hours Friday night, despite an ongoing lawsuit by environmental groups challenging the legality of the permit on the basis that the ship will violate Canadian environmental laws.
VANCOUVER-- Fishing is allowed in all but one percent of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) on Canada’s Pacific coast, according to a study conducted by Living Oceans Society and published in Marine Policy this month. This is in spite of the fact thatover half of the MPAs are officially rated as “strictly protected” and are intended to prohibit all fishing.
SOINTULA, B.C. –-Almost 28 percent of the economy of the Regional District of Mount Waddington is dependent upon a healthy ocean, according to new research commissioned jointly by Living Oceans Society and the Regional District of Mount Waddington. The study undertaken by GS Gislason and Associates Ltd. uses data from 2009 and interviews with local residents to measure both the direct contribution of marine industries to local communities and where in the regional waters these activities occur.
VANCOUVER—A report released today by the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development supports Living Oceans Society’s contention that the federal government is failing to live up to its international commitments on effective marine protected areas (MPAs) and has left taxpayers exposed to enormous liabilities for oil spills in Canada’s oceans. The report responds to a petition filed by Living Oceans.
Canada’s Pacific North Coast has some of the most treacherous waters in the world, with deep fjords, narrow passages and strong tidal currents. Countless reefs and rocks are scattered along the coast, many of them uncharted. In summertime fog blankets the coast and violent storms rage all winter long.
Just off northwest tip of Vancouver Island, a chain of five unique islands jut dramatically from the cold depths of the North Pacific Ocean. These islands, Triangle, Sartine, Baresford, Lanz and Cox are collectively known as the Scott Islands.
