Proposed Canadian Organic Aquaculture Standard opposed by over 40 North American organizations

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has been working behind closed doors with members of the salmon farming industry to develop a standard that would allow net-cage salmon farms in Canada to be certified as “organic.”

View the CAAR statement to read how the “organic” label for farmed fish fails to meet consumer expectations and environmental principles.
New federal aquaculture regulations for B.C.

Now that regulation of aquaculture in B.C. is a federal responsibility, DFO will begin licensing operations at the end of 2010 through the Pacific Aquaculture Regulations. The proposed regulations are now available for public review and comment until September 8, 2010.

Public input is critical for making regulations that truly protect B.C.’s oceans and all that depend on them.

Bycatch report on Canada's Pacific groundfish bottom trawl fishery
A new Living Oceans Society report, Bycatch in Canada’s Pacific Groundfish Bottom Trawl Fishery: Trends and Ecosystem Perspectives, looks at the ecological implications of this fishery’s bycatch over the past decade. Based upon these trends, the report recommends that a moratorium be placed on landings from an unsustainable deep sea fishery for longspine thornyhead, and that an ecosystem-based bycatch policy be developed and implemented as soon as possible.
